Bright Eyes to play “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning” and “Digital Ash In A Digital Urn” in Brooklyn

In spite of it all they still somehow wanted to finish what we had set out to do…

In the aftermath of the freak thunderstorm that abruptly ended our Forest Hills performance in June, we all arrived back at our hotel soaking wet. We were a sad sight to see. All of the hard work and planning over the last year had resulted in only one of the three anniversary performances going off without a hitch. We all sat around the lobby bar with stunned looks on our faces, unable to believe our luck.  

I decided to go up to my room to smoke a cigarette and sulk in private. Nick Zinner stopped me at the elevator and asked to come along, looking as dejected as I did. We sat down on the balcony’s wet seats, and before I could spew my avalanche of apologies and sadness about the way things turned out, he stopped me and said, "You know we have to finish this."  Nick went on to inform me of the shared sentiment of the band members and crew that were gathered downstairs. Someone had even reached out to Eyegarden, the amazing visual team behind the shows, and learned they felt the same.  

I had wrongly assumed with all the misfortunes that befell the anniversary shows, everyone's spirits were broken and they were ready to hang it up and call it a day. I was incredibly moved by everyone's immediate desire for redemption. They still wanted to somehow finish what we had set out to do.  I teared up a little from the immense gratitude I felt towards everyone involved.  Hey, I thought, I’m pretty damn lucky after all.
